Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) in a Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday in DSRF! Upcoming dates include:

  • Tuesday, 4/1, Wednesday, 4/2, and Thursday, 4/3 in the Bridal Veil Falls, Shelter Rock, and Conservation Road areas (9am - 5pm)

  • Tuesday, 4/15 at High Falls (9am - 5pm)

The Eastern and Carolina Hemlocks are beautiful evergreens native to our area that are realizing significant damage by the hemlock woolly adelgid, an aphid-like insect that feeds on starches from the trees.  They are found in forests as well residential areas so the damage is noticeable to most tree lovers.  Learn more about the species, the insect and the effective treatment method by joining us for a chemical treatment day.

No prior hemlock treatment experience is necessary. All volunteers will be accompanied by an experienced, licensed professional from HRI who will provide instruction and guidance every step of the way.

Please note, we will be working with insecticide. No special equipment is needed, but long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes with socks are required. Gloves will be provided.  Eye protection is neither required nor provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Be prepared to be in the woods, off-trail, for the duration of the day - bring along hydration and nutrition as needed.

Volunteers may sign up for any or all of these workdays. More details about where to meet will be provided after registration.

Please email Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org with any questions.
