Join FoDF Board Member Al Beers for an advanced level course on orienteering at DuPont. Your guide has 15 years of experience in the sport.
Orienteering is the navigation of unfamiliar terrain using only a map and compass. It has developed into a growing sport from its early roots in Swedish military training. Western North Carolina is fortunate to have clubs based in Asheville and Charlotte that conduct regular meets.
We will begin with a short tutorial in the Guion Farms Access area. An orienteering map will be provided. You should bring a compass, but a phone app works as well. Then we will navigate in the Forest, locating physical markers.
If you have minimal experience that's OK, as we will be hiking en masse. More importantly you need to be comfortable on steep terrain with several creek crossings. We will mostly be off trail, so long pants and sturdy hiking footwear are required. Plan on around 3 miles of challenging trekking through some new, scenic areas of the Forest. Bring water and a snack as needed.
This event will proceed unless there is a total washout. Notification will take place via email 24 hours prior in the event of a cancellation. If necessary the backup date will be Sunday, February 9, same time.
